Dr. Esa received this special distinction for his extraordinary service in promoting the German language. Dr. Esa has been chairing the Language Department at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, since 2007 and teaching German there since 1992. In 1995, he founded the annual German-American Day celebration at McDaniel College, which now draws more than 1,000 people interested in Germany and the German language from the Greater Washington/Baltimore region and which is known well beyond the state’s borders.
Dr. Esa’s innovative instruction methods and curricula are very popular among students and German teachers. His interdisciplinary course Kulturmetropole Berlin - "Cultural Metropolis Berlin" was recognized by the National College Board as one of the best German courses. Dr. Esa also particularly distinguishes himself by sharing his curricula and experiences with other teachers. A long-time active member of the German Society of Maryland, Dr. Esa also actively works to promote the German language in U.S. schools. www.germany.info
Mohamed Esa received the Cross of the Order of Merit on October 12, 2009. Two other German Society Directors received this award in earlier years. Judge Gerard Wittstadt received the award in 2002 and Dr. Armin Mruck in 1997.
